Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley

Hidden behind the Leaky Cauldron in London, and found by tapping the right bricks in the alleyway wall, is the archway entrance to Diagon Alley. It is a long, cobbled street, with at least one known offshoot (Knockturn Alley), and lined in shops, restaurants and probably some sort of housing. We know that the Weasley twins lived above their shop, and several canon street addresses include "B," so there could be several multi-story buildings along the street.

You know what would rock right here? A map. Too bad we don't have one yet. Again, with the completely unsubtle hinting that I do. If we did have one, it would probably look a bit like this one from the Lexi. Only different, because copying is bad, and also, I don't like where he put Gringott's because I really like the image of it sort of on that weird corner, perhaps right next to that Knockturn Alley split off instead of across the street there. Also, no WWW, which we need. http://www.hp-lexicon.org/atlas/britain/atlas-b-diagon.html

Apothecaries

  • There are several of these sorts of shops found in Diagon Alley. Some specialize in potions and remedies, others in herbs and other plant life. The items required to create potions can also be found in some of these shops.

Brews & Stews

  • Above Wiseacres Wizarding Equipment is a boarding house for traveling wizards, that offers food and a place to rest. The proprietrix is Clutterbuck Crispe.

Daily Prophet Offices

  • The newspaper has an office in Diagon Alley, where letters to the editor should be sent.

Eeylops Owl Emporium

  • For all your Owl needs, including cages, treats and the owls themselves.

Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour

  • When Harry was in school, Fortescue would offer him free sundaes and advice. Sadly, Fortescue disappeared during the Second War and the parlour was boarded up.

Flourish & Blotts

  • The bookstore in Diagon Alley, where books on a variety of subjects — including the textbooks for Hogwarts — are sold. The store is packed with books, and covers several rooms and at least two floors.

Gambol & Japes

  • A joke shop that sells a variety of tricks and practical joke items, including the Dr. Filibuster's Fabulous Wet-Start, No-Heat Fireworks that the twins were so fond of.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank

  • The tall, white-marble building found near the side street of Knockturn Alley is the goblin-run Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The bank will exchange money (including Muggle currency), handle transactions, and offers vaults for storing coins and valuables.
  • The front doors are burnished bronze, the goblin guards wear scarlet and gold uniforms. The inner set of doors are silver and engraved with a warning to discourage thieves, and another set of goblin guards. The main hall is a large chamber with a long counter, where hundreds of goblins sit on high stools doing the various tasks necessary to run a bank. Several doors lead from the main chamber — each guarded by more goblins — to the caverns beneath the bank where the vaults are kept.
  • The underground caverns are lit by torches, and a goblin is usually waiting to pilot a small cart along the tracks that go deep into the stone passages. We know there are more than seven hundred vaults, with varying levels of security that require different means to open them.
  • Gringotts also employs curse-breakers (like Bill Weasley), who travel and retrieve antiquities and treasures for the bank.
  • The goblins have been known to increase security measures in times of conflict. During the Second War, it wasn't uncommon to spend hours trying to get access to a vault, and the use of a Probity Probe did happen from time to time.

Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions

  • Next door to Flourish & Blott's, Madam Malkin's sells school robes along with various styles of — as the name says — "robes for all occasions."

Magical Menagerie

  • The walls are covered in cages filled with magical creatures and familiars, and everything you need to care for your pet.

Obscurus Books

  • Found at 18A Diagon Alley. Obscurus Books is the publisher of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Ollivander's — Makers of Fine Wands since 382 BC

  • Since the beginning of the Second War, Mr. Ollivander has been missing and the shop has been closed. The walls used to be covered, floor to ceiling, with thousands of boxes, each containing a wand handcrafted by Ollivander himself.

Pottiges Cauldron Shop

  • The closest shop to the entrance of Diagon Alley, obviously this shop sells cauldrons. All makes, sizes and compositions of cauldrons.

Quality Quidditch Supplies

  • Everything you need to play (or to be a fan of) Quidditch.

Secondhand/Junk shop

  • Broken, mismatched, worn and "well-loved" items can be found here.

Secondhand Robe Shop

  • In the Muggle world, we'd call them "gently used" or perhaps vintage.

Scribbulus Everchanging Inks

  • Next door to Quality Quidditch Supplies, a stationery store that sells ink, quills and parchment. The shop also sells a line of Scribbulus Everchanging Inks.

Slug & Jiggers Apothecary

  • The Apothecary in Diagon Alley, presumably it sells potions as well as potion ingredients. Barrels of bulk items and shelves covered in jars of powders and smaller ingredients fill most of the space, with bundles of dried things hanging from the ceiling. The entire shop has an unappealing odor, rotten cabbage and bad eggs.

Street Vendors

  • Peddlers and vendors sell all sorts of things on the street, although one has to wonder at the quality of products.

Terrortours

  • A travel agency for wizards and witches, found at 59 Diagon Alley. They offer tour packages that include Transylvanian castles for rent (complete with a vampire host), a trip down the "Zombie Trail", cruises through the Bermuda Triangle (where you can see the wrecks of ships that "didn't spot the monster") and other exciting — and probably dangerous — activities.

Twillfit & Tatting's

  • Probably found in Diagon Alley, Twillfit and Tatting's is an upscale robe shop.

Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes

WhizzHard Books

  • Found at 129B Diagon Alley, WhizzHard Books is the publisher of Quidditch Through the Ages.

Wiseacres Wizarding Equipment

  • Wiseacres sells all sorts of devices for wizards, including hourglasses and telescopes.

Various Cafes

  • There are several cafes up and down the street, some have outdoor tables with brightly colored umbrellas.

Knockturn Alley

Knockturn is a darker version of Diagon Alley, shops and street vendors sell creepy, sinister or just plan evil products. There are several shops, but only one is named in canon.

Borgin & Burkes

  • Located at 13B Knockturn Alley, Borgin & Burkes is the largest shop on the street. Mr. Borgin buys and sells various Dark Arts items, all of which have a dark and sinister taint.
