Other Places of Note

Azkaban

  • Azkaban fortress is maintained by the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Home to some of the most notorious criminals in the Wizarding World, the prison was built on a small island in the North Sea.
  • For years, the prison was guarded by Dementors — sightless creatures that feed on positive emotions and could "suck out the soul" through "the Dementor's Kiss." Many long-term prisoners were driven mad, forced to continually relive only the worst memories of their lives; others lost the will to live and died.
  • In 1996, the Dementors left Azkaban — allowing ten known Death Eaters to escape — and joined Voldemort's growing army.
  • Azkaban Prison is still in operation, although conditions are much changed without the Dementor guardians.

Godric's Hollow

  • Godric's Hollow is a Muggle village (possibly in Wales, although this is unconfirmed), most likely named after Godric Gryffindor. Little is known about the village, although it has been around for hundreds of years.
  • Bowman Wright, the inventor of the Golden Snitch, lived in Godric's Hollow in the mid-1300s.
  • Lily and James Potter lived in a two-story cottage there, after they went into hiding and made Peter Pettigrew their secret keeper. In October of 1981, the Potters were killed by Voldemort and the cottage destroyed. Both Lily and James Potter are buried in the area.

Malfoy Mansion

  • Located in Wiltshire, in southwest England, the mansion has belonged to the Pure-Blood Malfoy family for generations. There is a secret compartment under the drawing room floor, and one can assume there are probably others in the home and on the grounds.
  • The Malfoys have owned at least one House-Elf and may have owned or procured others to work at the mansion.

Ottery St. Catchpole

  • Ottery St. Catchpole is a small Muggle town along the River Otter in Devon, near Exeter. Although predominately Muggle, Ottery St. Catchpole is also home to several Wizarding families: The Weasleys at the Burrow, the Diggorys, the Fawcetts, the Lovegoods and possibly others.
  • Stoatshead Hill, the hill where the Weasleys and Diggorys caught a Portkey to the Quidditch World Cup in 1994, is located outside the village.
